Twisted Powdered Sugar Donuts-Ocean City
The grandkids were here today, and we had powdered sugar donuts from Shipley Do-Nuts for breakfast. Got me to thinking about the Ocean City donuts of my youth.
Kleemans Grocery store, 56th Street, Ocean City has been gone for a long time. But in the olden days, it was an local family owned convenience type store. Kleemans just sold basics, along with baked goods that were brought in early every morning from a bakery from the downtown area of Ocean City. The donuts always sold out early.
Well, my mom had it down to a science, she knew when the donuts were delivered. On our special occasion donut for breakfast day, she made sure someone in our family was sent to Kleemans soon after the donuts arrived at the store so we would get first choice. It was usually my brother or sister who was sent to get a dozen. (It was not like they had to go far, it was out the back door, down the back alley past two houses and across the street) Gees the donuts were probably a nickel each. Oh those days are long gone…Well, my favorite donut, all time, no comparison was the twisted donuts covered with Powdered Sugar. They melted in your mouth…I have never found those scrumptious fattening monstrosities anywhere else - Believe me, I have tried powdered sugar donuts in many places, not one is near as good. Although, Shipley Do-Nuts, here in Texas, has a pretty good round powered sugar donut…It’s just missing something….Probably the Ocean City Salt Air!
I do have a wonderful donut recipe I’ve made in the past - it was years ago, before cholesterol, clogged arteries, and a decent metabolism! The recipe came from my mother-in-law. I’m not going to post it…Come on, no one really needs to make and eat a double recipe of homemade deep fat fried donuts!!!
Are you beginning to crave donuts for breakfast tomorrow morning????

Thanks Shirley for making me crazy...I have a sweet tooth but my teeth do not do well on sweets. Ouch! Just polished off a lovely green smoothie for breakfast, - tasty fresh fruits and greens but in no way did it feel like a donut... grumble. Sue
I am wanting a donut right now,, how sick is that. Thank God I am too lazy to get in the car and go buy some.
Sue, I don't think I ever had a green smoothie! You are probably much healthier than I am right now! Just finished off shredded wheat...
Joy, go get the dang donut! It's worth the trip-besure to go to Shipley-Skip Sundale donutst, they are small and tasteless! :-)
I gave donuts years ago but now I want one.
I have read that the reason things tasted so good when you were young is that you had many more taste buds then. As you age you lose taste buds and it is never the same. That is why many people think no one can make 'apple pie' like their mother. It was the taste buds.
I think I agree with that explanation.
should have said 'gave up eating donuts'
That is probably so true about the taste buds...Did not think about that before. Soo...I'm never going to find another donut to compare because I've lost my taste buds??? Dang, I hate getting old!!! :-)
Where did we get the ones we used to eat with aunt joan? Those were yummy as well!
Aunt Joan used to drive to a bakery in OC located on 8th and Asbury Ave. I think it is called Wards. That is where they sell those awesome butter cookies. They have not changed the recipe in 50 years. Great cookies, twisted powdered sugar donuts, and awesome sticky buns. Who could ask for more???
