Why am I writing a blog?
I have been thinking about this for a while and had trouble coming up with some kind of theme. I’ve decided to share some of my stories and some of my favorite recipes. When my son got married in 1999, I typed up all the favorite family recipes and made a cookbook for all my kids. Well, those recipe 3-ring binders have all been well used and are falling apart. I’ve decided to share the recipes along with some stories behind them, if there is a story.
It seems like articles about “Food Police” have been been popping up in the news lately. Talk about not having desserts just sends me over the edge! My mom always said a meal without desserts just is not a meal. She was a good cook, but I only ate meat and mashed potatoes growing up…never ate anything green. I was the youngest of four kids and by the time I came along, they gave up making me eat vegetables.
Ok…Desserts! My mom never made one pie, one cake, one batch of cookies. She made at least 3 pies, 5 cakes (Hot Milk Sponge Cake-Recipe follows), and at least doubled every cookie recipe. Extras were put in the freezer to enjoy later. She did not do this every day, mostly just for special occasions, and no one in the family was overweight. You don’t get fat by having a little dessert.
