5613 Asbury Avenue - Ocean City, NJ
Here’s a picture of the house taken not too long after my parents purchased it in 1952. This house originally sat beyond 59th street and was moved to this location for some reason, not sure why. Beyond 59th street, there are now no houses, just sand dunes.
The Shingles on the house were a brown color. That room on the front of the house must have been added after it was originally built. When we first moved in, there were “front” windows inside the house and were not removed when the front was added. I’m thinking that my parents decided to remodel the house about 1955.
Here’s a picture of my sister, Joan, me, my cousin Barbara and our dog Tippy just enjoying the front steps before they were demolished. Notice the conk shells in the grass…You used to be able to find them all the time when walking on the beach. It’s hard to find them these days. Here’s a picture of the back of the house during the remodeling. My dad, brothers and Uncle did all the work - I'm sure if you asked her, my sister would tell you she had to do most of the work! :-) That’s my dad’s cool truck in the picture. He always had a truck van for his business. There was not a more fun way to ride from Philly to Ocean City than to sit in a lawn chair in the back of the truck van and play with my dolls. Yes, those days are long gone…Seatbelts? They were not even invented in those days.
I’m no where helping with this - I was probably off playing with my dolls. That’s my brother Bob with the hammer. Bob later did some awesome remodeling on the inside in about 1970. He put in a whole new kitchen and divided the inside of the house into 4 bedrooms. Here’s a good picture of the house after the remodel. The "new" shingles were pink...yes pink...They must have been on sale! It looked like this until my dad sold it in about 1973 or 74? Yes, my dad sold the house a scant couple years before Atlantic City opened the casinos, and the price of houses skyrocketed in Ocean City! Dang...Talk about poor timing...
